Last weekend we celebrated the 2nd Spanish 1/18th Cup in Parla, Madrid, with weather being quite different than usual… too hot for January.

Nearly 70 drivers took place in this event with their M18 to run one of the most exciting races in Spain, thanks to XRAY importer Micromodel. People could win a lot of prizes and exchange a lot of important information with different Spanish class champions in different categories (such 1:10th 200mm, 1:10th electric touring car, 1:8th).

This was a great ‘learning experience’ type of race… a race where young people and old people met in a kind of ‘multi-age’ race where "old school" drivers taught younger drivers some lessons in mechanics and young drivers taught older drivers how the new generation was coming on... very strong!

The race venue was 1:10th 200mm with 5 qualifying heats… 1/64th, 1/32nd... until the great final. A lot of heats were held and people were a little bit confused with this system, but by Saturday evening the drivers were getting used to the system and more action was introduced in the racing… one mistake meant you were out.

Only seven drivers went straight from qualifying to the semi-finals, and there they would have to run against other people who came up from 1/64th through to the semis.

Gonzalo Garcia got the best lap time, having an average of nearly 0.5sec over the 2nd place driver, and 1 lap more than the rest of drivers. Everything seemed to be in place for this guy take home the win. With 10 drivers in total for the final and a very long but tight track, passing other drivers was almost impossible. In the final, three +40 year old drivers were going to show why old racers never die… and incredible young Adrian Ortiz (14yo) would run his XRAY M18 PRO against old-school racers and show people see how strong the new generation is… very strong!

On the start line cars, the signal went and so did the cars… very quickly!
Gonzalo (TQ) was crashed by the second place driver and it was a great m?lée to try to get through the first corner unscathed. After that, Gonzalo tried to make a break from the pack and he succeeded in the first lap, putting 4 seconds between himself and the next driver. Following him were Adrian Ortiz, Pedro Fuentes and J.A. de Lara (old-school +40) battling strongly for 2nd place. We all tried to remember that the final lasts for 15 minutes… but in the first lap we were all enjoying the “driving lessons.”

Gonzalo got some space between himself and Adrian (2nd place) and started to get more distance until he lapped the other drivers. The biggest battle was among the other drivers, especially Adrian Ortiz, J.A. de Lara and Pedro Fuentes. In the final 3 laps everything seemed to be decided, but then Gonzalo (who was getting ready to lap 2nd place again) ran out of batteries lost the race… very bad luck.

Pedro would get the lead only in this heart-stopping, with 3 drivers within a 5sec spread. Gonzalo changed his batteries and from last position would take 4th overall.

Final results:

1 Pedro Daniel Fuentes Castro
2 Jose Antonio De Lara Fernandez
3 Adrian Ortiz Anton
4 Gonzalo Garcia Casado
5 Luis Cayetano Martínez Paredes
6 José Conde Ortega
7 I?igo Berreteaga
8 Juan Manuel Alvarez Mancha

After the finals were over, Micromodel gave a lot of presents for the drivers, including an M18 PRO, M18T, cups, banners, wheels... a very good ending for a fabulous race weekend. Many thanks go to Carlos Ducay, Micromodel President, XRAY Spanish distributor, as well as the Club CAPA members for a job well done.
