Race report by Jason Branham
Round 1 of the Texas State RC Pro Series was held at Mike’s Hobbies and Gulf Coast Raceway in Houston, TX. Mike’s is becoming well known for its first class facilities and I’m sure you will hear about it much more this year as it plays host to the 1/10 sedan World Championships held in July. If any of you know about Houston weather especially in the summer then you know it can stay pretty saturated with rain therefore, owner, Mike has built a building just to cover the off-road track so we get to race rain or shine. The surface is a hard packed clay surface and with 250+ entries for Rd. 1 the track was going to take its share of abuse but also give it back with its technical design.

In electric 1/8 buggy it was all about Mr. AVID him self, David Joor, and his prototype XRAY 808 as he TQ’ed 2 of 3 rounds of qualifying and should have been all three if it had not been for his speed control shutting down in round 2, David said it was due to a poor mounting location. Joor would go on to dominate the first two legs of the triple A-main format to take the overall win for Rd.1 and show that the 808 is every bit as good with out a gas engine in it.

In Pro Arena Truck I had my XT8 on rails as I TQ’ed all three rounds of qualifying to set myself up nicely on the pole for the main. In the main I got off to a good start and began to stretch my lead early but tragedy would strike as I clipped the wall heading down the strait away breaking my right front shock end. The shock got lodged in my a-arm which made the truck undriveable but I managed to limp into pit land where my pit guy was able to pull my shock free allowing me to get back on the track. With the loss of time 2nd place, Mugen team driver, Mark Morrow had closed the gap on my lead and with a broken truck I was loosing time each lap until Mark ran into problems himself. With Morrow out of the race it allowed me to put it in cruise control and take the win for Rd. 1.

In Pro Buggy I was under a little more pressure, due to missing my first qualifier, so in rounds 2 and 3 I knew I had to be consistent and that I was as I went on to TQ the last two rounds to claim overall TQ, again setting my self up nicely for the main. In the main I got off to a fast start and with an immediate pile up behind me I had a comfortable lead early. The battle on the track however was for the 2nd spot between Team XRAY drivers Jake Dellinger and Roger Ayers. For 30 minutes they both drove very clean but Roger was never able to close the gap allowing Jake to hold on to 2nd with Roger finishing 3rd. I was able to keep the car together this time and eventually I took the win making it a 1, 2, 3 XRAY podium.
