This past weekend (February 17th – 19th) saw the Southend Radio Car Club host the inaugural International Memorial Cup, in order to remember those in the hobby we have lost over the past year, in particular Mike Reedy and Ted Longshaw.

The meeting got underway on Friday night with an open practise session, followed by controlled practise rounds on the Saturday morning; the Xray cars looked to be strong in both the 21.5 and 13.5 classes, looking fast and consistent on the challenging but open layout, with Darren Tickner and David Bowen recording fastest times in their respective classes.

Qualifying was run using a round by round format, Darren continued his domination of the 21.5 class TQ’ing 5 out of the 6 rounds to take top spot in qualifying, with Dominic Shore managing to also make the A final, lining his Xray up in 6th position.

In the 13.5 class it was David Bowen who picked up where he left on in practise, like Darren TQ’ing 5 of the 6 qualifying rounds to secure the overall pole position. It was another Xray in the hands of Bryan Loynes who took the other TQ round in this class, and his consistent challenge to David over the other rounds resulted in second place on the grid. Mark Buonaiuto and Tony Broad also showed good pace in qualifying, resulting in 4th and 7th on the final grid respectively with their Xray cars.

Finals were run over three legs on the Sunday, Darren suffered a minor blip in the first final being beaten by Richard Clarke, in the second final it looked as though Richard was going to secure the overall victory after taking an early lead, but Darren managed to put a fantastic move on him with less than 30 seconds to go, and duly went on to win this leg. A measured drive from the front by Darren in leg three saw him secure the overall victory, with Richard taking a well-deserved 2nd. Strong finals for Dominic resulted in him just missing out on the podium and taking 4th overall.

Back in the 13.5 class it all looked to be going to form after the first leg, David taking the victory in the leg by close to 4 seconds over Bryan in 2nd. That was all to change in the 2nd leg though, David and Bryan running in 1st and 2nd built up a substantial lead over the rest of the field and a fantastic move by Bryan on the last lap saw him take the victory in this leg with David in 2nd it guaranteed an Xray 1-2 with the final leg deciding in which order they would end up. David made best use of his pole position starting slot taking another comfortable victory, with some bad luck for Bryan resulting in him finishing down in 4th position in this leg. The outcome of this was David securing the overall victory with Bryan in 2nd, Mark and Tony were both unable to use make best use of their cars in the finals and finished up in 7th and 9th positions.

Congratulations must also go to national Pro Stock champion Ayrton Anderson for winning the 10.5 class, with some fantastic driving from 3rd on the grid. A big thank you to all those involved in the event, ?1600 was raised in total from the various raffles and auctions held throughout the weekend for the nominated charities of Ted and Mike.
