Heritage…Luxury…Performance

Building on the heritage of quality, performance, and support evidenced by multiple Car of the Year awards, Viewer’s Choice awards, and countless victories at racetracks around the world (including the prestigious European Championship title), the XB8 is what you would expect of an XRAY car – a premium, professional, high-competition model racing car for the most demanding racers, developed and designed with attention to the smallest details.

Manufactured from premium European materials, machined using state-of-the-art Swiss and German, and backed by premium service & support, the XB8 is typical XRAY: a luxury masterpiece of engineering.

Back to the Future

“Designing the new off-road platform brought me back in time to 1986 when I first designed and hand made my first 1/8 off-road car; it featured revolutionary pivot ball suspension with adjustable caster, camber, and roll centers. The performance & extreme durability of that car allowed it to win all of the races around.

Years later in 2004, XRAY’s truly first mass-production XB8 became one of the most successful off-road cars winning the European Championship title. This déjà vu inspired me with the idea to get back to the future with the all-new platform, to have it proudly bear the XB8 name to pay tribute and carry forward the winning heritage.”

XB8 Debut.

There is no other 1/8 off-road car that had such an incredibly outstanding prototype debut than the new XB8. Reno Savoya & Martin Bayer brought the very first prototype to its first official race – no less than the European Championship – and went on to give one of the most thrilling main final races in EC history. After leading the main final, Reno Savoya finished only 0.7sec behind the winner, with Martin Bayer finishing in a very close 3rd place, making it a double podium finish and one of the most successful prototype debuts ever.

“The early XB8 prototype proved to be unbreakable which boosted my confidence during the races. Our trust in the car allowed me to focus on racing and I could easily battle for a podium finish at the Euros.”

“The improvements in performance and handling of the car are just tremendous...you will love the car like nothing else.”
“We were confident going to the Euros that we had a car that we could take all the way for the win.”
“The best part about working with XRAY is that everything is possible. Juraj does not accept limitations, and there are no problems that cannot be solved, and no performance that cannot be attained.”
“The first tests of the new pivot ball suspension were very successful, so already in the very early stages we knew and felt that this concept had HUGE potential...”
“For me, the 2013 Euros was one of the most thrilling events to participate at. The new car - despite being an early prototype - was working tremendously, and I was able to battle for the win. David and I swapped the lead several times, and I finished in 2nd place within less than a second. That was without a doubt the tightest Euros result ever.”
“I’ve been working as a Pro driver for three different companies, and honestly XRAY is the best for developing products; they listen to all the feedback and are very proactive. There is simply no equal.”
“The speed of development at XRAY is second to none. Juraj is a real perfectionist and he kept us supplied with new parts to test and report back. This year, I have certainly wrenched the most in my racing career.”

XRAY Multi-Flex.

The invention of XRAY Multi-Flex Technology has resulted in some of the most significant milestones in RC model car development in the last decade. This innovation has not only resulted in awards and accolades, but has proven to be a distinct competitive advantage at tracks worldwide, helping XRAY cars dominate races at local and national levels.

XRAY off-road cars were the world’s first off-road cars incorporating Multi-Flex adjustment technology, which allows tuning of chassis flex for different track conditions.

It doesn’t matter if the track has low, medium or super-high traction, you can adjust chassis flex to suit track conditions in a matter of seconds… and then re-adjust flex easily if conditions change. It has never been so easy to professionally set up flex. Yet another smart innovation from XRAY.

STIFF Use the STIFF setting for high-traction tracks where a lot of steering and responsiveness is required.

The more screws used, the stiffer the car will be; the fewer screws used, the softer the car will be. Do not remove any screws other than those shown.
MEDIUM Use the MEDIUM setting for medium-traction tracks. This setting offers a good balance between steering responsiveness and traction.
SOFT Use the SOFT setting for low-traction, dusty tracks. The car will generate a lot of traction with this setting, but will have less steering and response compared to medium and stiff settings.

Chassis.

The chassis is CNC-machined from 3mm high-quality Swiss 7075 T6 aluminum, which is strategically machined in low-stress areas and then anodized to make it as light as possible without affecting strength or rigidity.

Non-essential material below the engine, fuel tank, and differential was removed to allow for the lowest possible center of gravity and appropriate chassis flex.

Weight distribution, chassis width, and chassis length have a key influence on the handling of the car. All of these features were incorporated into the design of the chassis.

All screw holes on the bottom of the chassis are countersunk, allowing for a very smooth chassis underside with no protruding screw heads.

Side Guards.

The tough composite side guards protect the car, muffler, and fuel tank from side impacts. The side guards perfectly fit the chassis and seal against dirt. Ribs on the left side guard protect the fuel tank from muffler heat.

The side guards are specifically engineered as a part of the Multi-Flex adjustment system.

Chassis Weight Balance.

The layout of the electronics and position of individual sections of the car were designed with optimum weight distribution and balance in mind. During the design and prototyping phase, several different layouts were tested and an extensive amount of data was collected, compared, and evaluated by the factory team before the final design was chosen.

The engine is positioned parallel to the chassis centerline, and the center differential is positioned to allow the central drive shafts to be as straight as possible.

Radio Plate.

The 1-piece electronics assembly is very compact and can be quickly & easily removed for servicing and cleaning. You need only to remove a few screws from the bottom of the chassis to remove the entire electronics assembly from the car.

The large molded radio box features a very clean design and layout that places the weight in key areas for proper balance. The batteries are placed along the centerline of the chassis in the front, and the lightweight receiver is placed on its side at the rear. The easy-to-access radio box is mounted on the side of the car and is secured by the fewest possible screws.

For racers not using a radio switch, a handy molded cover is included to help guarantee a leak-free radio box. The tight antenna tube holder ensures that the antenna tube stays attached even if the car flips over.

Pivot Ball Suspension.

XRAY Pivot Ball Suspension XPBS™ is a uniquely innovative concept, and smart R&D design. The ultra-robust pivot ball suspension has integrated suspension geometry adjustment, with different kingpin plates being the only optionally-available tuning parts.

The complete integrated suspension geometry adjustment includes:

Suspension Concept.

Suspension geometry is one of the most important features of any RC model car, yet at the same time is also one of the most difficult and challenging features for a designer to create and perfect.

Suspension is always a mixture of:
From arms and suspension blocks, to light-yet-robust steering blocks, every suspension part has been specially designed for 1/8 off-road racing to provide responsive handling and performance characteristics under all racing conditions.

Over the years, XRAY has successfully gained, utilized, and applied extensive knowledge of suspension geometry and stiffness, all of which has been carefully considered while designing suspension parts. The ultra-lightweight suspension parts are molded from a special composite material that makes the parts very light yet very durable to withstand the rigors of high-performance racing.

I.S.S. Suspension Holders.

The aluminum suspension holders feature Integrated Suspension Settings (I.S.S.) which allows for quick & easy suspension geometry setting.

Using eccentric suspension bushings inserted into aluminum suspension holders – as well as additional suspension shims – the XB8 suspension geometry can be completely adjusted in mere seconds.

Suspension Arms.

Suspension arms are one of the most important parts of any RC model car, as they directly influence the handling and responsiveness of the car. XB8 suspension arms are the result of long-term testing of different designs and layouts. Length, thickness, flexibility, geometry of suspension points, and material characteristics… all these aspects and details had to be thoroughly reviewed to create optimal suspension arms.

Based on extensive knowledge gained from previous XB-series cars, several different suspension arm designs were tested in both virtual reality and in-car to determine the best final designs. The exclusive composite mixture used for suspension arms is a perfect balance between reliability and performance. The suspension arm itself is rigid enough to provide a responsive feel, yet soft enough to survive extra-long main events.

SFA Graphite Stiffeners.

SFA™ graphite stiffeners allow for super-quick suspension flex adjustment to easily adjust the traction of the car in various track conditions.

Whether you drive in low- or high-traction conditions, with the smart SFA™ graphite stiffeners you can very quickly and easily adjust your car to suit current conditions. At the beginning of a race event when traction is low, the arms are used without the SFA™ graphite stiffeners. As traction increases, the suspension can easily be made stiffer by mounting the SFA™ graphite stiffeners for more stability and easier driving characteristics. The SFA™ graphite stiffeners give the car maximum stability in chicanes and allow for easier and smoother steering.

The graphite stiffeners are recommended for use at big jump tracks and also when the weather temperature is 30°C or higher.
Made from high-quality CNC-machined graphite material, the stiffeners can be easily mounted or removed by only a few screws.

SFA™ stiffeners are available as option parts.

Steering Blocks.

XPBS™ steering blocks are unique, innovative, smart... an authentic XRAY innovation.

The steering blocks feature the following integrated geometry adjustments:
The steering block consists of a super-lightweight composite steering block and stiff Swiss 7075 T6 kingpin plate. The steering block is mounted via massive pivot balls into the upper & lower arms.

The upper pivot ball is mounted into an adjustable upper ball joint and via roll center shims to the kingpin plate; this assembly allows camber and upper roll center adjustment. Using shims of various thicknesses, the upper roll center can be adjusted quickly & easily.

The lower pivot ball is mounted into the steering block via an adjustable alu nut and composite bushing. By adjusting the pivot ball, both track-width and camber can be adjusted.

A higher roll center (more shims) is recommended for grippy, high-traction tracks as well as for bumpy tracks.

A lower roll center (fewer shims) is recommended for slippery and smooth tracks.

Rear Uprights.

The ultra-tiny XPBS rear uprights are unique, innovative, smart… an authentic XRAY innovation.
The rear upright consists of a super-lightweight composite upright block and stiff Swiss 7075 T6 mounting plate. The uprights were designed to have the smallest design with minimal weight, yet be strong enough to survive rigorous impacts.

The upper roll center plate has a unique design that allows easy changing of roll center position. The roll center plate features 2 roll center positions, so by placing the plate the opposite way another 2 roll center positions for super-fine tuning are available. The roll center shifting is in range of 2.5mm. The roll center height of the upper camber link can be adjusted via shims of various thicknesses. The composite upright features 2 lower roll center positions.

The outer suspension pin on which the rear upright sits features 2 shims which allow for additional wheelbase adjustment.
The uprights feature integrated geometry adjustments including:

Suspension Additional Weights.

The smart design of the steering block & rear uprights allows for the mounting of optional weights. To increase the stability of the car, optional brass weights can be mounted directly under the steering blocks and/or rear uprights to further lower the CG. Easy & smart… totally XRAY.

Front Upper Suspension.

The front upper suspension is part of the innovative and unique XPBSsuspension concept. Extra-strong and robust front upper arms are mounted to the front bulkhead assembly into the front shock tower and adjustable suspension holder. Using eccentric bushings, front inner upper roll center can be easily adjusted.
Caster is easily adjusted using caster clips which are inserted either in front or behind the front upper arms.

The ball link is inserted into the upper arm and the integrated adjustable turnbuckle can be accessed from outside for quick & easy camber link adjustment.

Diff Bulkheads.

Diff bulkheads are an important chassis component, housing both
the front and rear differentials and providing mounting points for the
suspension mounts and shock towers.

The diff bulkheads have been designed for extreme durability, while
providing easy access for tuning and maintenance.

HUDY Spring Steel Turnbuckles.

To guarantee maximum reliability, all turnbuckles are manufactured from a special blend of HUDY Spring Steelwhich is specifically formulated for turnbuckles. These turnbuckles have a tougher core, and are well suited for the steering system and rear upright linkages.

Alu Hex Hubs.

Ultra-lightweight 17mm wheel hex drive hubs are
CNC-machined from Swiss 7075 T6 black-coated
aluminum.

The alu hex hubs are specially machined to reduce
rotating weight while guaranteeing wobble-free
wheel mounting.

Drivetrain.

The XB8 is a conventional shaft-driven 4WD off-road car featuring:

Drive Shafts.

XB8 constant velocity drives (CVDs) are manufactured from world-renowned HUDY Spring Steel™. The drive shafts are some of the world‘s thinnest yet most durable drive shafts used in off-road cars.

The central larger and stronger outdrives feature protective rubber boots, thick 3mm pins, and protective locking rings.

All drive shafts and outdrives are hardened with a proprietary hardening process to provide unbeatable lifetime and reliability.

Diff Outdrives.

To reduce rotating weight, the super-lightweight diff outdrives are machined from HUDY Spring Steel™ which allows unnecessary material to be removed from the outer part of the outdrives to further reduce weight without affecting durability. The inner portions of the outdrives are additionally hand-ground for maximum precision and fitment into the diff case.

The outdrives are hardened using HUDY’s own special hardening process to provide extended life time and reliability.

Gear Differential.

Rubber-sealed composite differential housings feature steel inserts that are manually precision ground after the molding process to guarantee a perfect fit with no vibration. Differential internal gears are made from pressed steel, heat treated, and machined for ultra high precision and smooth operation.

Diff Gears & Drivetrain Ratio.

Differential main gears are manufactured from HUDY Gear Steel on a precision manual gear machine. This material was specially formulated and developed for use in gears. All gears are hardened to provide the longest possible lifespan.

A wide range of different gears — spur gear, clutchbell, crown gear — is available for perfect set-up and tailoring to particular racing conditions.

High-Torque Clutch.

The high-torque clutch provides smooth and continuous transfer of power from the engine at high RPM. The clutch engages higher in the RPM range, resulting in more controllable power during acceleration, while still maintaining good handling and performance on jumps.

The Swiss 7075 T6 aluminum flywheel has a smaller diameter but heavier weight. The smaller diameter allows the flywheel to be more protected after landing large jumps, so there is a reduced chance for engine stoppages due to the flywheel contacting a rock or other obstacle. The flywheel’s heavier weight results in smoother and more balanced engine operation.
The Swiss 7075 T6 clutch shoes are small, lightweight, and designed for engagement during the entire travel of the shoe. The shoes are less sensitive to wear and as such their lifespan is increased.

The extra-tough flywheel nut is machined from Hudy Spring Steel™.

The clutch is equipped with soft clutch springs; optional medium and hard springs are also available.

Shock Towers.

Machined from extra-thick premium-grade graphite, the shock towers are lightweight and very strong. Front and rear shock towers include multiple shock positions as well as multiple roll center positions. The rear shock tower also holds the wing mount and rear chassis brace.

The included front shock tower steel protector not only protects the front shock tower, but also increases its strength.

Shock Absorbers.

The XB8 big-bore, long-stroke
shocks have a special construction that gives
ultimate reliability and performance.

These new shocks have had all parts fully redesigned and adjusted to take advantage of the big-bore design. The oversized big-bore shocks feature 18.5mm outer diameter shock bodies, externally threaded with an adjustable collar for quick & easy spring preload adjustment. The shock bodies are hardcoated in a titanium color and feature a 1-piece alu shock cap.

Ultra-precise shock pistons feature 6-, 8- and 10-hole options. The longer shock shafts and shock collar combine to give increased downtravel. Ultra-fine shock protective rubbers give superior sealing against dirt.

The large 16.0mm inner diameter of the shock bodies ensures proper and consistent shock oil flow through the perfectly-round pistons while they travel inside the smoothly-finished interior. The result is more consistent damping characteristics.

The big-bore pistons are molded from tough, well-proven Delrin® material to provide smoother action and durability. The precision molding production process ensures perfect roundness of the pistons after production, so that the pistons will move smoothly inside the shock bodies for identical action in all four shocks.
The specially-formulated rubber material of the shock membrane ensures equal damping characteristics from the beginning of the race to the end, even after extreme operation.

The lower shock assembly ensures that the shock rod will move very freely inside the shock body, while at the same time minimizing oil leakage and keeping dirt out. Two shock O-rings – manufactured from a superior silicone compound to allow ultra-free movement of the shock rod while still maintaining a tight seal – are installed in the lower part of the shock body and are secured with composite shims. The entire lower shock assembly is secured with the lower aluminum shock cap which makes assembly/disassembly very quick and easy.

Thick and robust shock shafts will handle any abusive racing conditions and big jumps. The 3.5mm thick shock shafts are precisely machined from special high-tensile steel and afterwards are ground for a super-smooth finish to ensure smooth movement of the shock shafts in the shock bodies.

Shock Springs.

XB8 springs have been specifically designed to complement the big-bore shocks.
These XRAY shock springs, like all other XRAY springs, are manually measured, selected and matched into pairs to guarantee precisely equal length and damping characteristics.

There are two types of springs offered:
Spring rate is constant during the entire spring compression. Springs with different spring rates are available as optional tuning parts.
Spring rate is not constant, but rather the spring rate progressively gets heavier the more the spring is compressed. As the car initially enters the corner, the spring works like a softer spring to provide maximum traction. As the chassis begins to roll in the middle of the corner, the spring rate progressively increases until it works like a stiffer spring which allows the car to maintain maximum cornering speed.

Dual-Arm Steering System.

The dual-arm steering system is very simple yet effective
and features an integrated, easily adjustable servo saver
and Swiss 7075 T6 aluminum steering plate.
Ackermann is easily adjusted by quickly & easily changing steering link mounting positions on the steering plate.
Bump steer is easily adjusted by inserting shims between the steering plate and steering linkage.

Chassis Braces.

Front and rear braces have significant influence on chassis stiffness and flex, and as such have great impact on car handling under different grip conditions. The XB8 features the well-proven stiff composite braces at front and rear. These braces are more than up to the task… strong enough to remain intact even after heavy jumps or crashes (while still avoiding tweak or breakage), yet still flexible enough to generate the needed grip.

Front Braces.

The stiffness of the front suspension is easily adjusted to accommodate the particular track traction, even if the traction changes during the race the stiffness is very easily adjusted.

For slippery and low-traction tracks, the front composite brace may be removed and an optional reinforcement alu stand connects the front upper deck to the radio plate. This configuration generates more traction.

For low- and medium-traction tracks, we recommend using the front composite brace only.

For high-traction and hard-packed tracks, both the front brace and reinforcing alu stand are recommended to make the front suspension extra stiff.

Rear Braces.

The longer rear chassis brace included in the kit increases stiffness in the longitudinal direction and gives the car more side flex.

An optional rear short chassis brace provides more longitudinal flex and reduced side flex.

The smart design of the car allows both long & short braces to be mounted at the same time which makes the rear of the car very stiff and is suitable for extremely large jumps to protect the chassis from deformation on landing.

Center Differential Access.

Access to the center differential is super easy by releasing the upper deck with only 4 screws. The low center diff housing is sized to accommodate optional spur gears and the stands are lowered to keep the weight as low as possible and to allow smaller central diff gears to be used. The center diff housing stands hold the effective and race-proven brake system.

Brake System.

The XB8 features a well-proven, high-performance braking system that is strong, precise, and dependable to make slowing and stopping almost effortless. Coupled with the car’s balanced load distribution, the extraordinary control imparted by the braking system gives you complete confidence as you pitch the car into corners.
XRAY focused on the smallest details when designing the brake system. The laser-cut, precision flat-ground steel brake disk allows for fade-free braking in conjunction with the special high-grip brake pads installed on the laser-cut brake plates. The brake disk is small, slim, and very light. The precision hand-grinding allows true, wobble-free rotation. Brake inputs are transferred precisely to the brakes thanks to the rigid, high-precision machined brake cams. Both brake disk and brake pads are specially heat-treated for maximum lifespan.

Engine Mounts.

High-grade CNC-machined aluminum engine mounts are machined from lightweight alloy and help to dissipate engine heat. The engine mounts are easily adjustable from the bottom of the chassis to obtain proper gear mesh.
The engine mount has been specifically designed to extend up to the front engine bearing to provide higher reinforcement of the chassis in the longitudinal direction and in jumps will minimize the bending of the chassis between the clutchbell and spur gear.

Fuel Tank.

The extra-strong fuel tank features an integrated floating stone filter that ensures that the fuel pickup will always be in the correct orientation, even if your car isn’t. This fuel pickup system will allow fuel to continue to flow to your engine, even while waiting for a marshal to reach your inverted car and put it back on its wheels.
Internal baffles were added inside the fuel tank to ensure that the fuel will always be in the area around the fuel line intake so even in large jumps the fuel will be constantly supplied to the engine.
The fuel tank cap features a very strong spring which ensures the cap will always close after refueling, and the specially-designed rubber seal perfectly seals the fuel tank and ensures no fuel will leak outside .

The fuel tank is molded from a special composite mixture that ensures very high reliability and rigidity. The molded-in splashguard protects the brakes from fuel spillage. The tank is mounted with rubber grommets to absorb vibration, and small composite holders secure thick 5.5mm silicone fuel tubing. Gluing of the tank pieces is performed by a special self-developed robotic system that ensures maximum accuracy and precision in pre-heating and gluing.

Anti-Roll Bars.

Anti-roll bars used to stabilize the car are manufactured from spring steel material. The front & rear roll bars are easily mounted to the diff cases, and can be adjusted through adjustable linkages.

Anti-roll bar wires of different thickness are optionally available for fine-tuning your set-up.

Ball-bearings.

A full set of 24 high-speed, blue-sealed ball-bearings are used throughout the drivetrain to ensure maximum efficiency.

Silicone Oils.

XRAY Premium Silicone Oils are manufactured in Europe by a specialized premium silicone oil manufacturer; these new oils were exclusively created for XRAY. Each batch of premium oil is laboratory tested and calibrated to ensure the highest possible consistency and quality from batch to batch. Based on the industry-standard cSt rating, the new line of oils will be easy to identify, adjust, and feel.

When following any set-up sheets by XRAY or XRAY team drivers, you can be sure that the oils you will get for your car are exactly same as those used by the factory racing team, thus ensuring very exacting set-ups and handling.

Graphite Grease.

The XB8 includes premium HUDY Graphite Grease - a high-performance, advanced-technology semi-fluid lubricant which incorporates both extreme pressure additives and finely-dispersed graphite for load carrying. HUDY Graphite Grease is intended primarily for the lubrication of rotating parts and loaded gears. In addition to providing outstanding load carrying, it is formulated to have excellent adhesion and resistance from "flinging off" under extreme conditions. HUDY Graphite Grease reduces wear and increases parts life.

Air Filter.

The smooth-flowing, efficient air filter is made from two parts. Air filter oil is included as standard. The universal rubber elbow allows fitment to most standard 1/8 buggy engines.

Body.

The XB8 low-downforce, low-profile aerodynamic body perfectly fits the car and works for most track conditions. The body reduces downforce and makes the car easier to drive especially on rough & damaged tracks. The body is made from high-quality premium Lexan™ material.

For low-traction tracks, the optional #359707 high-downforce body is recommended. The front and rear of the body have been designed to provide high downforce for maximum stability. The body sides and cockpit sides are as flat as possible to allow the air flow around the body to stabilize the car. On the top of roof, two flow channels are incorporated for proper air flow.

Wing.

The stylish and effective rear wing was designed to provide the appropriate amount of downforce and generate required stability for the car. Made from a strong special composite mixture, the wing was designed to survive severe abusive and extreme crashes while keeping its shape.

Wing Mounts.

Rear wing holders are made from a special composite mixture to withstand abuse and crashes, and feature several different wing mounting positions.

Body Sealing.

The side guards feature areas for Velcro® tape to form a perfect seal between the side guards and the body to prevent dirt from getting inside.

Mud Guards.

The rear suspension arms feature pre-drilled holes where optional mud guards can easily be installed. The lightweight mud guards protect the rear drivetrain in wet and dirty track conditions.
