Race report by Michael Stone
The annual Smokem championship was held on Friday 14/01 - Sunday 16/01
Friday was open practice, with both XRAY X4 2022 and X12 2022 showing great pace and potential. Working closely with the team to bring everyone up to speed.
Heading into qualifying and nitro day on Saturday with my X12 2022. Qualifying was tough, everyone being separated by 100ths of seconds throughout a run. After some driving errors, I was able to secure 5th on the grid.

Heading into the A Mains. Before the mains, I regrouped and refocused. Following some errors from other drivers, I was able to work my way up to the back of first. After applying pressure for some time, I was able to force an error allowing me through, giving me the win in the A1. Unfortunately, the event was rain effected and called on the first final, giving me the overall win.

Heading into qualifying on Sunday with my X4 2022. Open practice in the morning, track was very green due to heavy overnight rains. A short delay before opening the track for practice. I elected to run new tyre for open practice, to get a better feeling for Q1, my car felt good. The team all looked comfortable heading into qualifying. In Qualifying, again, was very tight, so many drivers with the potential to snap the win, separated by 100ths of seconds on clean runs. One small error would cost you multiple positions.

Unfortunately, I had made a few small errors in qualifying, again making finals harder for myself. Starting from P5 on the grid, I had some work to do. In A1, I was able to secure 3rd after some great battles with fellow drivers. In A2, I was able to secure 4th, in A3, pushing for the whole run, I was sitting 3rd for most of the race when P2 was to have a slight spin out, I was able to slip through and P1 had a mechanical failure in the last 30 seconds of the race, allowing me to take the overall win for A3 and securing overall P2 for the race meet.

I'd like to thank the entire team for all their hard work throughout the event, especially Chris Peet, Brian Stewart, and Ray Zarb. Working closely together throughout the weekend to ensure that our cars where as good as we could get them. A special shoutout to Wade Faber showing great potential with his first outing with his XRAY X4 in 21.5, also Phil Merrick on his 3rd position in 21.5 and Ray Zarb on a solid 4th position.
