Report by Nejc Mihelic
The first round of Austrian championship was held at the very fast track in Sollenau – MRC-Fruhwirth. Official event started on Saturday with a perfect weather during the whole event. In the controlled practice it was both Xray drivers Nejc Mihelič & Sascha Klug on top of the grid. Both Xray drivers successfully translated the pace to the both qualifiers held on Saturday as each of them won qualification round infront of Tobias Sutrich.
On Sunday, the last 3 qualification rounds were split between driver Nejc Mihelic and Tobias Sutrich, meanwhile Sascha Klug was unfortunately not been able to participate in the fight due to technical issues. In the end, the number of points and individual rankings between Sutrich and Mihelic (Xray) were equal. However due to the valid OFMAV rule where worst qualy’s time is binding, it was Sutrich who took the TQ infront of Nejc Mihelic (Xray) and Herfried Pucher.
In the 45 minute long main A final a great strategy was necessary in order to fight for the podium places due the the high tire wear. At the start of the final Sascha Klug (Xray) immediately suffered a flame out and fought with many other difficulties therefore he had to prematurely retire. His teammate Nejc Mihelic (Xray) had a great start and fought with Sutrich and an inability to brake through the whole final due to the malfunction of servo/spur. Due to the perfectly set strategy from Mihelic (Xray) which included the use of harder tyres, the gap between 1 st and 2 nd was melting due to Sutrich struggles with worn out tires. A direct fight was seen and displayed in the last minute of 45 minute final as both drivers were side to side. At that time Sutrich suffered a blow out and therefore it was Nejc Mihelic (Xray) who took the win infront of - Tobias Sutrich (2 nd ) and Herfried Pucher (3 rd ) who also suffered a blow out in the early stages.
